Enshrouded Gameplay
Story & Overview
Enshrouded is set in the world of Embervale, where you are the survivor of a fog set to wipe out the world. Your priority goal is to reclaim the lost kingdom by adventuring, crafting, and conquering enemies who look to destroy you.
Getting Started / Resources
Below are the following priorities when playing Enshrouded and its core gameplay mechanics:
Establish Base: Create a Flame Altar that can have multiple bases.
Gather Resources: Used for crafting base, items, weapons, and armor.
Eliminating the Shroud: Deadly fog that prevents explorations.
Unlock Survivors: Helpful additions to your base with crafting trees.
Leveling Base: Advance base which helps explore more Shrouded areas.
Completing Quest: Progress in the main story for new survivors and more.
Exploring the Map: Discover ancient obelisks, flame altars, & ancient spires.
The first objective after the tutorial is establishing a home base using a Flame Altar. Your base and Flame Altar are an important part of crafting, progression, story, and overall character development. Additionally, the Flame Altar is here you can respec/reset your skill points for character builds. As a beginner in Enshrouded, your base will start as level 1 basic. However, you can upgrade this which gives important bonuses and passive traits.
Below is a list of functions your home base Flame Altar serves in Enshrouded:
Cook: turn raw food into useful buffs.
Repair Weapons: keep materials functioning which doesn’t cost resources.
Storage: store items for crafting or later use.
Production: combine materials in production furniture for advanced material.
Craft: create armor, weapons, or production items with raw materials.
Upgrade Weapons: improve weapons using Runes.
Comfort Level:
Enshrouded doesn't necessarily have strict requirements when it comes to your character's daily needs. You don't really have to worry about hunger, thirst, or stress. At best, you just need to make sure that you have available slots in your backpack or that you've built a storage chest(s) in your base. As for stamina itself, this is tied to your character's comfort level, which includes the following:
Cooking and eating food - You can cook food at campfires. Interact with one and select a type of raw ingredient or food item. Then, press and hold the button to place it over the fire. After a few seconds, you'll see an effect that denotes that the food has been cooked.
You can eat three different kinds of food to have three effects/buffs active at the same time.
Food items need to be assigned to your hotkey if you want to cook them by a campfire. You cannot select them if they're in your backpack.
Try to avoid eating raw meat as this might cause poisoning, too.
Source of warmth - The aforementioned campfires provide a source of warmth.
Sleeping/resting - Finding a bed to sleep in or constructing your own lets your character get some rest.
If your character is well-rested, you'll gain additional stamina, as well as increased stamina regeneration. The duration of the effect also varies depending on how long you've rested.
Gathering Resources and Tool Use:
Use the right tools when gathering resources. When it comes to survival in Enshrouded, you should definitely avoid using your regular melee weapons when gathering materials. Instead, try to craft and use the proper tools:
Axe - Requires 4x Twigs, 1x Stone, and 1x String; speeds up and improves the yields when cutting down trees.
Pickaxe - Requires 4x Twigs, 1x Stone, and 1x String; has a small radius which automatically collects rocks and dirt that get hit.
Other resources can be gathered normally even without the use of tools. For instance, Twigs and Plant Fiber come from shrubs that you just need to interact with.
Destroy and loot everything. Speaking of gathering materials, bear in mind that a lot of objects and structures in Enshrouded can be destroyed using your weapons. These include barrels, chests, crates, fences, paneling, furniture, and more. These also yield resources for your crafting needs.
How to get/use/find Flintstone
Flintstone veins appear all over the map in Enshrouded, with a particular concentration in the Springlands, the starting biome. This is good because you'll need a lot of Flintstone if you plan on using it as a building material for your home. Flintstone veins are a dull blue, with patches of bronze. It can't be missed. If you see a Flintstone vein in the floor or a cliff wall, you can mine it using the Pickaxe.
How to get/use/find Clay
Clay isn’t something you can get early in Enshrouded. And the mobs around the Clay spawn points can be pretty tough. Additionally, the area where you most Clay spawn points is where you unlock the Farmer, so you may as well clear that out and unlock the Farmer.
You can find Clay spots in the area north of Ancient Vault Farmer. Of course, you can find Clay spots all over the world, apart from the early area, but it’s around Ancient Vault Farmer where there are more Clay nodes and Flax Flowers.
Once you have Lumps of Clay, visit your base and use the Kiln. You unlock this after you recruit the Carpenter. You need one Lump of Clay and one Wood Log to make one Fired Brick. You can us the Fired Bricks as a new building material. Recommendations: Be at least level ten; Unlock the Carpenter; Unlock the Farmer; Have flame level three.
How to get/use/find Copper
Copper Ore is one of the stronger resources you need to track down in Enshrouded after you have an established base. It’s a basic material you’ll need for more advanced crafting projects, and tracking it down takes a bit of time. Amber is an essential resource to unlock and craft recipes like the Fireball II and Eternal Fireball Staff Charges and to strengthen the Flame at your Flame Altar. There are multiple locations where you can reliably find Copper Ore. The trick to finding it is recognizing the areas where you need to go and how out of the way you have to go for it.
Where to find copper? The more reliable locations are to the north of the Farmer’s shelter and to the east of the Ancient Spire – Low Meadows. You can make your way to either location as you progress through the main story of Enshrouded, and you’ll want to bring a pickaxe with you to break away the rock to find it. After you have enough, speak with any crafters to see what they can complete for you, giving you access to more advanced recipes. You’re still going to want to find plant fibers, though.
How to get/use/find Amber
Amber can be found protruding from walls and pillars in the Shroud. It has an orange color and smooth texture with light gouges covering its surface. Amber is an essential resource to unlock and craft recipes like the Fireball II and Eternal Fireball Staff Charges and to strengthen the Flame at your Flame Altar. Specifically, you can find Amber in the following locations:
In the Shroud northeast of the Revelwood Ancient Spire
In the Shroud south of the Revelwood Ancient Spire
Notable Locations in Enshrouded
Enshrouded Biomes
Springlands & Low Meadows: This peaceful, hilly area is filled with the ruins of civilization and mildly challenging enemies. You'll find most of the basic resources you need to get started in this area.
Revelwood: A massive forest filled with poisonous creatures, Revelwood is where you'll start to get your hands on real workable metal such as Copper. Explore this area thoroughly and you'll go beyond equipment made from salvaged scrap.
Nomad Highlands: This savannah-like area is filled with dangerous creatures -- and even greater treasures. You'll find Tin and other useful materials here.
Kindlewastes: The hot fiery deserts of the Kindlewastes have little in natural resources and plenty of danger. The best resources are available here -- but so are the most challenging enemies.
Food Groups
Best basic and Overall Food for game play
Best basic food
Food is a very helpful resource from the first moment you begin playing Enshrouded, so you need to know which dishes are the best ones you can use early on. When you first start off, you’ll be learning how the game works and won’t have access to the entire map until you craft items to help you get around like the Glider and Grappling Hook. The best foods you can eat in Enshrouded varies depending on whether you’re playing early on or deeper into the game. You won’t have access to everything you need to make the absolute top-tier foods right away, so here are both the best foods you can eat when just starting off and the ones that are ultimately the best overall.
Grilled Wolf Meat: Wolves are fairly easy to kill and can be taken down quite easily with even the simplest of weapons like a torch, which you get very early on. You need to cook Raw Wolf Meat to make it a viable food source, but it’s easy to do this since all you need is a campfire or another source of fire for cooking. Can be cooked using Raw Wolf Meat. Grants +2 Constitution. Lasts for 20 Minutes. Purple Berries: These aren’t the most fulfilling, but they’re growing everywhere you look which makes them a super accessible food source early on. Found growing on bushes in the wild. Supplies +2 Health Regeneration. Lasts 30 seconds.
Grilled Lean Meat: Another good source of food in the early game is Lean Meat. It provides slightly less of a Constitution boost in comparison to Wolf Meat, but it’s still decent. Obtained by killing small animals in the wild. Grants +1 Constitution. Lasts for 20 minutes.
Water: An incredibly simple but effective drink, Water provides some pretty solid benefits. What’s great about this resource is you can obtain a lot of it by visiting wells like the one in Longkeep, which is near where you first start off. Can be obtained from wells or found in villages. Eventually, you can add a well to your base, but you can easily find Water elsewhere earlier on. Gives +1 Endurance and +2 Stamina Recharge. Lasts for 10 minutes.
Best overall food
Here are the overall best foods you can eat in Enshrouded, all of which require a lot more work to unlock and make. You’ll generally need to travel far to access everything you need for these which means you need the Glider and Grappling Hook.
Fruit Bowl: A Fruit Bowl is a great dish to eat in a pinch because it supplies a strong health restoration effect and a quick boost to your stamina, making it a great food when you feel you’re in danger of dying and need to make a quick getaway. It also has a really long duration. Requires the Farmer and can be made with one Honey, two Purple Berries, two Strawberries, and one Yucca Fruit. Grants +6 Health Regeneration and +3 Stamina Recharge. Lasts 45 minutes.
Grilled Yucca Fruit: When you’re in need of a massive stamina boost, this dish is a great way to quickly replenish a ton of lost stamina. This dish requires a Farmer and a Yucca Fruit to be cooked. Gives +20 Stamina Recharge. Lasts for seven minutes.
Chamomile Tea: Drinking this tea will grant you some strong buffs for a decently long period of time. It’s also not too difficult to make once you unlock the Farmer since it only has two ingredients. You need the Farmer to make this drink plus one Water and one Chamomile. Supplies +5 Health Regeneration and +2 Endurance. Lasts for 35 minutes.
Meat Wrap: This is a fairly strong dish you can consume if you’re looking for a boost to Constitution and Intelligence. Requires the Farmer, three Red Mushrooms, one Water, one Raw Sand Digger Meat, and one Flour. Grants +5 Constitution and +1 Intelligence. Lasts for 45 Minutes.
In addition to these main dishes, it’s also a good idea to keep foods capable of enhancing the statistics for your specific class. You might like Hazelnuts if you need to boost Strength, Mushroom Omelets if you need Intelligence, or Sage Leaves if you need Spirit.
Enhance Equipment / Armor and Weapons
Armor and Weapons
Acquiring Armor and Weapons
Many old weapons and other equipment found throughout the game can be salvaged and later enhanced. Though you cannot make any new advanced armor or weapons without the craftspeople, a small group of survivors like the Flameborn with specializations.
Each Craftsperson will have recipes for different armor and weapons that will be more well suited to a specific type of class players choose. The first craftsperson players will find is Oswald Anders, the Blacksmith.
Enhancing Armor and Weapons
You will be able to enhance already existing equipment when talking to any of the craftspeople in Enshrouded. You will need the item you wish to enhance in your backpack or the action bar to upgrade it. You will need to collect runes instead of using different materials to enhance each item. Each enhancement will take a decent amount of runes, so stock up.
Each enhancement will add bonus attributes to the equipment. Magical weapons will increase specific elemental damage, while melee weapons will increase specific physical damage. Rare weapons will have other attributes.
Enshrouded Class Archetypes
There are a total of 12 Class Archetypes in Enshrouded, split evenly between the six core stats. There are four for Constitution and Strength, four for Endurance and Dexterity, and four for Spirit and Intelligence. Enshrouded has quite a large skill tree and it can be confusing at times if you are not sure what role you want to play yet.
Class Archetypes
Constitution / Strength Classes
Constitution/Strength Classes are effectively the tanky "warriors" of Enshrouded.
Athlete: Focuses on staying power and endurance for melee combat.
Barbarian: Centers on big damage-dealing attacks and two-handed weapons.
Warrior: Increases power with bladed or piercing weapons and attack speed.
Tank: Helps you reduce physical damage.
Endurance / Dexterity Classes
Endurance/Dexterity Classes are the "rogues" of this world, focusing on agility and trickiness.
Survivor: Boosts your Stamina regeneration and passive buffs.
Beastmaster: Gives you passive resistance and benefits relating to wild animals.
Ranger: Strongly focuses on ranged attacks with bows.
Assassin: Emphasizes critical strikes with bows and ranged weapons.
Spirit / Intelligence Classes
Spirit/Intelligence Classes are the "mages" of the world. If you prefer to sit back and unleash magical hell, this is where you're going to want to invest your Skill Points.
Trickster: Focuses on debuffs and counterspells.
Wizard: Increases your proficiency with Fire, Ice, or Shock spells.
Healer: Unsurprisingly, this skill tree focuses on healing and reviving other players.
Battlemage: Helps you specialize in using Wands.
How Skills Work in Enshrouded
Skills Tree; Skill Points; Resetting Skills
Skills can be activated on the Skills Tree if you have Skill Points to spend. There are basically three types of Skills:
Active Abilities: New, unique abilities that you couldn't do without having the associated Skill (such as Double Jump).
Passive Abilities: New, unique abilities that activate on their own (such as Healing Revive).
Stat Boosts: Permanent increases to your core stats.
Some Skills will require multiple Skill Points to activate, especially if they provide you a new Active Ability or Passive Ability.
How to Get More Skill Points
There are two ways to get more Skill Points
Level up your Character
Destroy Shroud Roots
How to Reset Your Skills
You can reset your Skills by spending resources at the Flame Altar.
Best Skills to Take in Enshrouded
The Most Useful Skills to have in Enshrouded!
Here are some of the best Skills to take in Enshrouded!
Double Jump:
Jump allows you to jump a second time in the air. That's it. It massively increases your ability to traverse the world and it's useful for dodging incoming enemy attacks. It offers a massive increase in mobility that's useful throughout the game.
Updraft: On its face, Updraft is useful for extending your Glider flight range slightly. What makes this ability even more powerful, though, is that cleverly using it can allow you to glide up seemingly impossible hills and mountains. It's absolutely worth taking this Skill.
Good Metabolism: This gives you a straight buff to restoring your health from both healing orbs and potions.
Blink: Replaces your dodge roll with a short-range teleport. This is much more useful and greatly increases your mobility.
Counterstrike: Gives you a chance to magically reflect damage back at your attackers.
Shiny Plates: Gives you a 10% increase to your armor. It's a cheap way to boost your defensive capabilities.
Most of these Skills can be accessed fairly early on in the Skill Tree. Many of the later skills are more powerful, but these Skills would be useful for literally any style of play you'd like to go with.
Aside from these, the Skill Tree is generally well-balanced towards the different styles of play. Look at the Skills at the end of a Class Archetype tree and you'll find something that's pretty damn powerful.
Frequently Asked Questions
Enshrouded FAQs
What is Enshrouded?
Enshrouded is a cooperative survival crafting action RPG. Survive in the fallen kingdom consumed by an evil fog, the Shroud. Fight wild beasts and fearsome bosses. Construct grand halls and shape your homestead's terrain. Forge your warrior with diverse equipment and a huge, open skill tree. Venture alone — or with allies — into the mist to uncover the secrets of the kingdom's downfall.
2. What is the story?
The fools of the old world ruthlessly mined the earth for a magical elixir, and unleashed a ruinous fog — and corrupted creatures — from the depths. The kingdom was lost, but not before a few remaining warriors were placed in a long, dreamless sleep, until such time they could fight anew... that time has come.
3. Will it be multiplayer?
Yes. Enshrouded is a co-op online multiplayer game. Although the game can be played in co-op, one can also play solo and offline, but we strongly encourage players to grab a friend or three (and up to 16!) before setting out into the Shroud. It is just more fun.
4. What platforms will it be released on and when?
The game will be released in Steam Early Access first. We will eventually bring the game to other platforms (namely, Playtation 5 and Xbox X|S) and storefronts, after completion.
5. What engine is Enshrouded built on?
We use the Holistic engine, which is an engine we created ourselves, specifically designed and optimized to build Enshrouded.
6. How can I support the project?
Buy the game! Tell a friend! Tell your neighbors! Invite them to play! Development will benefit directly from more people knowing about Enshrouded and we have specifically made a game that can be played in single player, but truly shines when played with friends.
7. Will Enshrouded be available on GeForce Now?
Yes, Enshrouded will be available on GeForce Now. See this link for which countries the service is available in.
8. What languages will the game support?
When Enshrouded releases in Early Access, it will support English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, Ukrainian.
9. Is there PvP in the game?
As of yet there is not PvP mode in the game or any PvP mode planned. The game itself will stay as it is as a co-op game, as we think experiencing the game together is more fun compared to fighting against each other. Maybe, but only maybe, we are adding some modes in the future just to have some fun on the side.
10. Will the game support mods?
There are no questions that mods are what makes a game truly great, but at this stage, we cannot make promises that the game will be moddable, but it is something we would love to implement in the future.
11. Do enemies attack my base? Do I need to build defenses?
At the moment, enemies are only interested in attacking the players, not their bases or dwellings. This might change after Early Access, based upon player feedback.
12. Can I use my old saves from the demo or beta builds of the game?
As we made many improvements to our save system throughout development, older saves from the Alpha, Beta and Demo versions are incompatible with the Early Access version of Enshrouded.
13. Can I use my character on another server? If so, what will I transfer with me?
You can absolutely take your favorite character with you and swap between servers. They will retain their entire equipment and inventory, as well as levels / skills unlocked. In addition, they will also maintain:
Map memory (locations and fog of war removed)
Personal crafting recipes (crafting that does not require a workbench)
Previously collected Shroud roots (you cannot farm Shroud roots by making new worlds)
Previously found lore texts and tutorials
Towers you found by yourself
They will not maintain:
The majority of crafting recipes (they are dependent on NPCs and crafting stations unlocked in the world)
Available NPCs for summon (gotta liberate them in the new world, too!)
Towers that were found by others and shared with the group

Changelog
Stability and performance

Multiplayer and Servers
• Fixed an issue that could prevent joining a server when the previous session was cancelled or crashed.
Game world
• Redistributed roaming enemies in several areas for improved balancing. • Fixed more cases of enemies with incorrect levels for the region that they are found in. • Fixed an issue where a Flame Altar near a Shroud Root could lead to the fog in the whole world disappearing. (this isn't how you're meant to save Embervale) • The game now prevents save points being activated when they are in deadly shroud. • Fixed an issue that could lead to wax and honey spawning in the player base without having to harvest a hive first. • Polished several points of interest. • Tweaked the sounds from Vultures. (we heard you and them! loud and clear) • Fixed several issues with incorrect ambient sounds. • Fixed an issue with music in dungeons being muted after combat. • Fixed the timings of the traps in Spires in multiplayer sessions.
Gameplay
• Fixed cases where the saving of crops when quitting and restarting the game world did not work properly. • Increased the stamina cost for the jump attack. • Fixed an issue where players climbing on walls and ladders could interfere with each other. (even though it was funny) • The water aura no longer heals when the player is dead. • Reduced the amount of twigs needed to craft arrows. • Increased the yield of twigs from grown bushes. • Increased the yield of feathers from their sources. • Lowered the amount of Flax needed to craft high end armor sets. (it was maybe a bit too much padding) • Lowered the amount of the resources needed to craft decorative books. (not all books are the Wheel of Time) • Castle Wall blocks now have the same maximum stack size of 5000 like other building blocks. • Fixed cases where open doors would block arrows or other projectiles. • Fixed some rare cases where looted weapons had an incorrect item level.
Building and Terraforming
• Construction hammer no longer allows cutting holes into unbreakable materials like the foundational bedrock material at the bottom of the world. (but it was funny though)

Workaround Define the server(s) as "favorite" in Steam.
Stability issues
With the current version of Enshrouded there can be some stability issues with multiplayer. Workaround Just press ESC. If the dot for the server (Hosting load) is yellow or red it is better to wait to play with fewer players.
Not enough system memory available error
Not enough system memory available error message on game start This error message triggers when your machine has under 16GB of RAM. It is there to warn you that your experience will probably be pretty bad. Workaround: You can bypass by adding "--disable-ram-check" to the game's launch options via Steam to ignore the warning. Keep in mind that if your computer is below specs, it might not be able to run the game in the long run, once we've added all the features we have in mind for Enshrouded!
Server progress vs personal progress is confusing
Currently if a player is not present when a boss is killed or the end of a quest is triggered, they miss out on quest completion. Workaround Players work as a Community. In a solo Guild. Some Repeat of Bosses / Quests may be necessary.
ENSHROUDED LOCKING
LOCKING is NONEXISTENT Storage and Bases can not be locked. Workaround Players work as a Community. In a solo Guild. Sharing bases and resources. Do not hog resources and do keep your valuables on your character.
